Thailand Expresses Deep Sadness Over Death of Worker in Israel

Thailand's foreign ministry has expressed profound sadness following the death of a Thai worker in northern Israel on Friday. According to a statement, the incident occurred in the Upper Galilee region, where the Israeli emergency response service, Magen David Adom (MDA), reported that the worker was killed by an anti-tank missile fired from Lebanon.

However, the Thai foreign ministry has contested this account, asserting that the fatality, along with the injury of another Thai national, was caused by an “explosion of dropped ammunition,” though it did not provide further details. The ministry stated that its embassy in Israel is closely monitoring the situation of the injured worker and is awaiting autopsy results to confirm the identity of the deceased before notifying their family.

In its efforts to assist affected citizens, the Thai embassy is also working to evacuate 10 additional nationals from the kibbutz where the incident occurred. They have urged other Thai citizens facing challenges in leaving high-risk areas of Israel to reach out for support.

The agriculture sector in Israel relies heavily on Thai workers, who have been integral in tending crops and working in dairies. Tragically, Thai nationals comprised the largest group of foreign casualties during the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, with many working in agricultural areas near the Gaza perimeter fence. Following these events, approximately 10,000 farm workers departed from Israel, according to government estimates.
