Second Round of Polio Vaccinations Begins in Gaza Amidst Ongoing Challenges

 

In the Gaza Strip, health authorities have initiated the second phase of a crucial polio vaccination campaign, aimed at protecting children from the debilitating disease. Over the next three days, children under 10 in central Gaza will receive their second dose, with plans to extend the campaign to northern and southern regions soon after.

This urgent effort follows the identification of the first polio case in Gaza in 25 years, a 10-month-old boy who now faces permanent paralysis in one leg. The campaign, which began last month, successfully reached approximately 560,000 children despite significant obstacles. These included ongoing violence, crumbling infrastructure, and the breakdown of law and order in the territory.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that temporary humanitarian pauses helped ensure the vaccine was administered effectively during the first phase. Health workers are now working under similar conditions to deliver the second round of vaccinations to vulnerable children in this war-torn area.
