UN Accuses Israel of Violating International Law in Southern Lebanon Breach
In a startling development, the United Nations has accused the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) of violating international law following a breach of a UN position in southern Lebanon. The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, has raised significant concerns regarding peacekeeping operations in the region.
According to a statement from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), at approximately 4:30 a.m., two IDF Merkava tanks forcefully entered a UN peacekeeping position by destroying its main gate. Peacekeepers, who were taking shelter at the time, reported that the IDF repeatedly demanded the base’s lights be turned off.
UNIFIL stated that after approximately 45 minutes of protests through their liaison mechanism, the IDF tanks left the area. The peacekeeping force condemned the incursion, calling it a "flagrant violation" of international law, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006). UNIFIL has since demanded an explanation from the Israeli military, labeling the breach as "shocking."
This breach was not the only event to alarm UNIFIL that morning. A second incident at around 6:40 a.m. in the same area involved the firing of several rounds 100 meters north of the UN position. Smoke from the firing caused skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions among 15 peacekeepers, who had put on protective masks but were still affected by the fumes. UNIFIL did not specify who was responsible for the firing.
In another development, the IDF allegedly stopped a critical logistical movement near Meiss el Jabal, further complicating UNIFIL's operations. The peacekeeping force has reiterated its call for all actors in the region to respect the safety of UN personnel and the sanctity of UN premises.
