Swedish Intelligence Investigates Possible Iranian Role in Embassy Attacks

Swedish intelligence agency Sapo announced on Thursday that there are indications of Iranian involvement in recent violent incidents targeting Israeli embassies in the Nordic region. Explosions and gunfire erupted near the Israeli embassies in Stockholm and Copenhagen this week, raising concerns about the escalating tensions.

In Denmark, authorities reported the arrest of three Swedish nationals following two explosions, believed to be caused by hand grenades, near the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen. The blasts occurred on Wednesday, adding to the alarm surrounding these incidents. Earlier, on Tuesday, gunfire was directed at the Israeli embassy in Stockholm, prompting an urgent investigation.

Fredrik Hallstrom, head of operations at Sapo, addressed the media, highlighting the agency's findings. “There are some things that could point in that direction,” he stated, referring to possible links to Iran. He noted that the choice of targets and the methods used in the attacks were concerning but emphasized that these were assumptions rather than confirmed facts.

In May, Sapo had previously accused Iran of enlisting members from Swedish criminal gangs to carry out violent acts against Israeli interests, a claim that Iran has denied. Recent reports from Swedish broadcaster SVT suggested that the latest embassy attacks may have been orchestrated by the Swedish criminal network Foxtrot under Iranian directives.

A Danish court has remanded two of the arrested individuals, aged 16 and 19, in custody for 27 days. They are suspected of acting in concert with others in connection to the attacks. During court proceedings, which were held behind closed doors, both teenagers denied the charges against them. The third suspect, who was arrested near the scene of the crime, has since been released.

These developments have sparked outrage and concern within the international community, as calls for heightened security measures and a thorough investigation into the Iranian government's potential involvement grow louder. The situation continues to evolve, and further updates are expected as authorities delve deeper into the matter.
