St. Lucie County Emergency Responders Overwhelmed by Tornadoes Amid Hurricane Milton
By Jessie Yeung, CNN
St. Lucie County, a region severely impacted by Hurricane Milton, experienced an overwhelming surge in emergency calls as multiple tornadoes struck within a 90-minute span. County Administrator George Landry reported that the emergency response system was inundated with around 900 distress calls during this critical timeframe.
In a coordinated effort, all three police departments, various fire districts, 911 dispatchers, and emergency response teams rallied together to handle the urgent pleas for assistance as the storm wreaked havoc across the area.
“With the break of dawn, our teams were out at first light to assess the damage,” Landry stated. “Unfortunately, the devastation was even greater than we anticipated. The tornadoes hit late in the afternoon, and then darkness descended upon us.”
Tragically, at least six fatalities have been confirmed in St. Lucie County as a result of the extreme weather conditions. The community continues to face challenges as responders work tirelessly to address the aftermath of the storms.
