Florida Airports Close Indefinitely as Hurricane Milton Leaves Trail of Destruction

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - As Hurricane Milton swept through Florida, several airports are now closed indefinitely while officials assess the extent of the damage. The storm, which made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in the Siesta Key area, has caused significant destruction and flooding throughout Central Florida.

At least three airports directly impacted by Milton's wrath have suspended operations for the time being. Tampa International Airport announced on Thursday that staff are currently inspecting the airfield and facilities to determine when they can safely reopen. The airport, which spans 3,300 acres, plans to release a reopening timeline later today following a thorough assessment of the site.

St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport has canceled all flights for Thursday and has yet to provide an estimated timeline for resuming operations. Meanwhile, Orlando International Airport reported that emergency crews worked overnight to respond to the aftermath of the hurricane, with damage assessments slated to begin shortly.

The airport’s official communication on X stated, “Once we have more information regarding the timeline for resuming commercial operations, we will provide updates.”
