EU Stands Firm on UNIFIL Troops in Lebanon Amid Israeli Demands

Brussels, October 15, 2024 – Despite increasing calls from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the withdrawal of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) troops from southern Lebanon, European Union member states have reaffirmed their commitment to maintain their peacekeeping presence in the region. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg stated that EU nations will not retreat from their positions, emphasizing the importance of their role in ensuring stability in Lebanon.

Netanyahu's recent remarks, urging the UN to withdraw its forces from areas perceived as strongholds for Hezbollah and active combat zones, were met with resistance from EU officials. In an interview following a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Schallenberg stressed that the safety and security of UNIFIL troops remain paramount and that there was no discussion about a troop pullback.

“There was no debate about pulling back or whatever,” Schallenberg stated firmly. “They are there to stay, but the security and safety of our troops is paramount and has to be ensured by everybody.” Austria contributes approximately 160 soldiers to the UNIFIL mission, which comprises around 10,000 personnel in total, with European nations providing about 3,600 troops.

In light of recent developments, EU contributors are set to convene via video conference to discuss their current posture and the long-term role of UNIFIL, focusing on troop levels, equipment, and rules of engagement. The discussions will aim to reinforce the mission's objectives in the volatile region while ensuring that peacekeeping efforts can continue effectively.

The unwavering stance of the EU highlights its commitment to supporting stability in Lebanon amidst ongoing tensions. As the situation evolves, the international community will be watching closely to see how diplomatic relations and security dynamics in the region unfold.
