In a deeply troubling development, the top UN humanitarian official in Ukraine has expressed grave concern over a brutal double attack that struck a hospital in the northeastern city of Sumy. The incident occurred on Saturday, when two drone strikes targeted the medical facility, resulting in the tragic loss of at least nine lives and leaving numerous others injured.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale released a statement condemning the attacks, emphasizing the sanctity of healthcare facilities during times of conflict. “Places providing healthcare must always be safe and not be subjected to such ruthless violence,” Schmale remarked, highlighting the critical role hospitals play in safeguarding lives.

The UN official further lamented that the second strike intensified the plight of the injured and hindered the efforts of first responders, who were already grappling with the aftermath of the initial attack. “Attacks against the wounded and those helping them are prohibited under international humanitarian law,” Schmale stressed, reiterating that civilians and civilian infrastructure should remain protected in conflict zones.

The recent drone strikes underscore the ongoing violence and turmoil in Ukraine, raising urgent questions about the protection of civilians and the enforcement of humanitarian laws. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, calling for accountability and an end to the targeting of essential services.
