Over 400,000 Votes Cast Ahead of 2024 Election: Key Insights

As the countdown to the November 5th General Election begins, the University of Florida’s Election Lab reports that over 400,000 people have already participated in early voting or returned mail-in ballots. Specifically, by the afternoon of September 29, a total of 426,298 votes had been cast, comprising 213,620 early in-person votes and 212,708 mail-in ballots.

With early voting gaining momentum, an impressive 45,020,537 mail ballots have been requested nationwide. States currently tracking these figures include Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland, Georgia, Florida, and Connecticut.

Voter Demographics and Trends

According to the latest data, the partisan breakdown of early voters reveals that 64% (49,045) identify as Democrats, while 19.5% (14,948) are Republicans. Additionally, around 16.6% (12,693) of voters are either unaffiliated or belong to other parties. Age statistics show that a significant majority of early voters are 40 years or older, with 37% of voters over 65, and only 8.5% aged 18 to 25.

Race and gender data indicate that 60.4% of early voters are non-Hispanic white, while 48.1% are male and 45% are female. These trends highlight a notable participation gap among younger voters and those from diverse racial backgrounds.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the increased popularity of mail-in voting since the COVID-19 pandemic, officials have raised concerns about potential delays related to the U.S. Postal Service. Louis DeJoy, the head of USPS, assured that the Postal Service is prepared for the upcoming election, addressing worries about improperly addressed mail and the timely delivery of ballots.

Furthermore, recent changes in Georgia and Arizona require hand counts of ballots at polling places on Election Day, a move that could delay the announcement of results. In Pennsylvania, legal challenges regarding provisional ballots are ongoing, with potential implications for how votes are counted.

As the election date approaches, a recent NBC News poll suggests that around 51% of registered voters plan to vote early, either by mail or in person.
